About Us

The Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals – Angell Animal Medical Center (MSPCA-Angell)

Since 1868, the MSPCA-Angell has been at the forefront of animal protection and veterinary care, providing hands-on care for thousands of animals each year. Today, the MSPCA-Angell is a world leader in animal welfare; healing, rescuing, sheltering, protecting, and advocating for more animals than any other humane organization in the United States.

The MSPCA-Angell is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that does not receive any funding from state/federal agencies and is not operated by any fellow SPCAs. We are deeply grateful for the generosity of our supporters, and the thousands of animals they help each year.

Our Mission

The mission of the MSPCA-Angell is to protect animals, relieve their suffering, advance their health and welfare, prevent cruelty, and work for a just and compassionate society.

Our Work

We are a national and international leader in animal protection and veterinary medicine and provide direct hands-on care for thousands of animals each year. Founded in 1868, we are the second-oldest humane society in the United States.

Our Beliefs

Since its founding in 1868, the MSPCA-Angell has worked to relieve suffering, prevent cruelty, and develop a just and compassionate society. Although these goals remain constant, societal change, technological advancement, and growth in human understanding dictate continual re-evaluation and redefinition of their implications for our work. Our Statements of Belief represent an application of the MSPCA-Angell’s Mission Statement to the major animal-related issues and concerns of today.

Our Services

Angell Animal Medical Center

Providing state-of-the-art veterinary care

Our compassionate team of highly experienced veterinarians, technicians, board-certified specialists, and support staff helps tens of thousands of pets and their families every year by providing the highest standard of primary care, specialty care, urgent care, and emergency veterinary services. In addition, our MSPCA-Angell Community Clinics provide low-cost veterinary care to financially qualified clients in need.

Animal Care and Adoption Centers

Finding loving homes for animals

We care for thousands of animals yearly at our BostonCape CodNevins Farm, and Northeast Animal Shelter animal care and adoption centers. The MSPCA-Angell staff and volunteers provide daily care and medical treatment to help these animals find loving homes.

Community Outreach

Delivering vital resources | Keeping families and pets together

At the core of the MSPCA-Angell is the belief that families and pets belong together. While our adoption programs work to bring people and animals together, our Community Outreach program works to keep families and pets together by offering affordable and accessible animal care resources, such as pet meals and vaccinations to families who need them.

Relocation and Shelter Mentorship

Transporting animals in need

Many shelters outside of Massachusetts are overcrowded and need help. By leveraging our relocation, transport, and adoption expertise, we provide help for thousands of animals in need. We also address local overpopulation through mentorships with our relocation partners. Within Massachusetts, we led the formation of the Massachusetts Animal Shelter Support (MASS) coalition, bringing together six animal welfare groups across Massachusetts to increase adoptions, reduce euthanasia and improve the health and well-being of shelter animals across Massachusetts.

Advocacy

Improving animal protection laws

The MSPCA-Angell drives lasting change for animals through legislative and public policy advocacy. Our team works locally, on the state level, and nationally to strengthen animal protection laws, supported by Animal Action Team members and Community Advocacy Leaders, who write letters, make calls, and lobby at the Massachusetts State House.

Law Enforcement

Protecting animals from cruelty

Our fully-commissioned law enforcement officers work to improve animal welfare by investigating complaints, issuing warnings, conducting follow-ups, and providing education. Partnering with our Community Outreach team, they proactively address issues before they escalate.

Strengthening the Human-Animal Bond

The MSPCA-Angell strives to strengthen the human-animal bond by sharing information and creating opportunities for people to learn, connect, and grow. Through our Humane Education and Animal Behavior programs, we offer workshops, seminars, training classes, and interactive experiences that promote empathy, care, and a deeper understanding of animals. By helping people build knowledge, confidence, and practical skills, we support positive relationships between animals, people, and the communities they share.
